Singer with long hair performs on stage, wearing a sequin dress, holding a microphone. Drummer in background. Dimly lit, lively mood.

Our second single, Gasoline, is out now on all streaming services. Here's a bit of background. Gasoline is a pop-funk beat packed with a groovy baseline and energetic harmonies that is full of fun.

Inspired by themes of victory, fun, and success, Gasoline is something of a working girl's anthem - probably in part due to the fact that it was written on the Sydney metro.

You keep that heart
Right there, on your sleeve
Unless you want it
Caught in my teeth

The Story:

Gasoline started as a simple tune I (Jules) first hummed to myself on the Sydney metro during my hour and a half commute to work. It's not easy to find time to write music when you're working a 9-5, but the snail-like pace of Sydney public transport actually turned out to be something of a gift.

Over the following weeks I spent my commute listening to my own terribly recorded voice memos of chords and melodies and fragmented lyrics scattered across my notes, and eventually over the course of the next few months, and with Sophie's help, Gasoline began to take shape.

Today, I'm thrilled to see it become a fully-realised song with a proper Spotify release date and (at the time of writing this) 138 streams! While it hasn't had the same success that Empress did (thanks to one viral TikTok), Gasoline is still one of my favourite songs I've ever written and I'm really proud to be sharing it with you today.

The final product? A catchy, corporate girlie anthem that (I hope) captures the epic spirit of its tarot inspiration.

I've been working for this
I've been burning for this
I've been hurting for this
I am deserving of this

The Inspiration: Tarot and Folklore

As with all our songs, Gasoline is inspired by a specific Tarot card. This one is also major arcana, like Empress, but with a very different story.

However, this time I will be keeping the particular card quiet for now - because shortly I'll be launching a competition to see who can guess it. A clue? It's all in the lyrics ...

I am a well-oiled machine
I run on premium gasoline

And when in doubt, the cover art should point you in the right direction:

Woman adjusting her hair next to a car, set against a deep blue background. Text reads "Jules of the Tide" at the bottom.

Stay tuned if you want a shot at a pretty fun prize! (To be announced soon).

Entries will be open to anyone, from anywhere, and the competition will be announced across Tiktok, Instagram and Facebook.

Well, I burned some bridges on my way
And I left a lot of ashes in my wake
But I'm a phoenix, baby, I need somewhere to hatch
And I'm a hunter, darling, I need something to catch

What’s Next?

Two girls sit on bleachers wearing sunglasses. A sunny outdoor setting with trees, a brick building, and blue sky in the background.

I really hope that people take a moment to listen to this song and help Sophie and I get a little closer to achieving our dreams.

Originally, Gasoline and Empress were meant to be two songs on the one album - but with the way that this industry is moving, albums seem to be a thing of the past.

SO, here we are, with an album of songs ready to drop and an industry screaming at us not to drop them all. Our compromise? We'll be dropping one song every month or so until we've released the full album! And if you live in Sydney, you can see the full setlist live (or watch along on our live streams when we have a gig). Our next song will be titled Hurricane and is inspired by the Tarot card, The Tower. For those who know Tarot, I assume a shiver just ran down your spine - yes, that's exactly what we're going for. It will be released in late April / early May (depending on how brutal our 9-5 gets over the next week). Oh to be a full time musician!

Here is a sneaky list of the songs you can expect to see hitting your Release Radar in the near future:

  • Hurricane

  • Magician

  • The World

Along with many more to come!

Finally, I want to thank you for reading this all the way to the end. I appreciate the generosity of your attention, and I hope that you can find in this song as much love as Sophie and I put into it.

In summary, If you're a lover of tarot, a music enthusiast, or simply someone in search of a fresh new sound, I hope that Gasoline will prove to be an instant playlist add.
